Rona embroiled in kickback scheme "The court certainly can't congratulate Rona L'entrept for the stratagem of paying a two per cent discount to someone who was neither the buyer nor payer," Quebec Court Judge Micheline Paradis noted in her 35 page ruling in the case of Boniface Awashish, 58.Awashish was found guilty on three counts for incidents that occurred between 1998 and 2005, when he worked as housing coordinator for the Atikamekw band council in Obedjiwan, overseeing purchases from the Rona store in Chicoutimi.Evidence showed that he proposed a scheme in which he would benefit personally from the band's purchases. The store would make out a cheque to him for a percentage of the sales, which he'd then endorse immediately and hand back in exchange for cash.The band council was the store's single largest customer, with purchases of up to $1 million a year.Former Rona employee Serge Dionne (fired in 2005) testified that Awashish first asked for a "gift" in a phone call in 1997.The gift in a question was an $800 generator.A year later, Dionne said Awashish asked for a sound system and home theatre system worth about $1,300.It also picked up the tab for repairs to Awashish's truck at a garage in Roberval in 1998, court was told.After Awashish asked for a cut of the band's purchases around 2000, Dionne said local manager Patrick Madigan (deceased in 2012) suggested offering roughly two per cent of sales.Dionne said that, starting in 2002, Awashish got a two per cent rebate when bills were paid.
